bill clinton has a great line that if you want to live like a republican, you should vote for a democrat because democrats will give you better economics. and that's, in fact, true. if you compare job performance under democratic presidents versus republican presidents over the last say 30 years, you will find that democrats on average produce far, far more jobs than do republicans. the problem for republicans is that they have an intellectually bankrupt economic policy and they've got a social policy that is worthy of the john burch society. these are the reasons the republicans lost and the fact the republicans can't face this, these facts, and understand and deal with them, it's not just that it is ingracious or ungracious in defeat and a lack of grace in defeat, it's also that they just don't want to understand that this is a changing country, this is a changing country demographically and they don't want to understand exactly the many reasons that they lost this election, and that's frankly good news for democrats if they don't want to face reality. >> but that's bad news, isn't it,

we learn of a different thomas jefferson here, somebody that almost, like, bill clinton. se seriously. you said just craved affection, wanted everybody to love him. you said he flirted with men and women alike. what do you mean? >> well, he was a is seducer. he was a vote getter. he had to -- you run campaigns. we all know people who have to win the heart and mind. >> portray him as a cold, detached man. >> margaret smith, the wife of the great republican editor in washington at the time, is sitting and we forget this because there weren't that many images around, she didn't know what jefferson looked like and a morning caller comes in. this very charming man and just telling stories and being brilliant and all of a sudden her husband walks in, mr. jefferson, i'm sorry i'm late. and her head explodes because she had been raised in this federalist family, taught this man was a great threat. >> she blushes and can't even speak. >> she has fallen -- one definition of charm is how do you make people fall in love with you without knowing why and jefferson had that. >> i never

on taxes it's as bill clinton said. it's simple math. spending is at 24% of gdp. taxes are at about 15% of gdp right now. even the most conservative member of congress only proposes to bring spending down to say 20% or even 19% of gdp. you still have a 4% to 5% gap. that represents hundreds of billions of dollars that has to be made up. even if you assume growth could get back to 3%, that won't make up the gap. so taxes have to be on the table. there's no way to get around that if you want to actually deal with the fiscal crisis that we have. and what is most heartening to me is to learn today that the president is willing to take this show on the road, to go out into the states and make the case and actually reinforce that mandate he has and make republicans realize that those that want to work with him will be rewarded as people who are trying to solve people, those that want to obstruct will pay a political praice that they will feel at election time. >> his opening act has got to be rick ross. these haters are not going to hold me back. some of the conservativ

. >>> back now live to the senator robert byrd and remarks by president bill clinton. >> all of the house members senators, thank you, senator rockefeller and thank you, vicky kennedy. i'd also like to thank all of the people here who at the time of his passing or ever worked for robert byrd who helped him to succeed for the people of west virginia. i thank them. and i want to thank the martin luther king male chorus. they gave us a needed break from all these politicians talking up here. i want to say first that i come here to speak for two members of my family. hillary wanted to be here today and she paid her respects to senator byrd as he lay in state in the united states senate before making a trip on behalf of our country to central and eastern europe. i am grateful to bob byrd for many things, but one thing that no one has given enough attention to, in my opinion, today is that while he always wanted to be the best senator and he always wanted to be the longest-serving senator, he wanted every other senator to be the best senator that he or she could be, and he helped hillary a lot

a lot of people thought that where bill and hillary clinton made a mistake was being too many details. saying this is our bill, take it or leave approximate. obama said, fine, you guys write the bill. perhaps they went too far the other extreme and the conclusion some have come up with right now. the white house are told by a lot of people who are their friends you need to sit down with harry reid and nancy pelosi and create a plan and are you going to reconciliation and what are you trying to get into this plan in the broader strokes and begin selling it in a new and vigorous way. >> we are looking at the polls. his approval rating is falling at near all-time lows at this point. 52% in the let'sest latest gallup poll here, chuck. does it mean the bipartisanship of reaching across the aisle falls by the wayside? i mean, could that not drive independents even further away? >> two ways to look at this. do you believe that the health care debate in the fall is a way to improve your poll ratings or not? i have a feeling the white house is going to conclude, look. the health care debate ha
